What are some good exercises for a person who does not exercise start off with?

I am trying to make exercise part of my daily routine. I need to start slow to keep my motivation and stamina up. Any ideas (other than walking) of what I should start off with?

do you have anything you enjoy doing such as swimming, biking, ice skating, roller skating, jump rope? The best “exercise” to do is something you find fun and enjoyable.
First of all congratulations on starting a habit that is GREAT for your body, mind and overall well being. I am overweight and started working out in March of 06. I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (chronic pain) and suffered depression and anxiety from it. I decided to take a turn for the better and help MYSELF since no doctor has been able to “cure” me! I started off at a local arthritis foundation water excersise class. Now i’m only 34 yrs old and was the youngest one there, but i worked my way up to regular water aerobics, swimming laps to now working out on elliptical machines etc. I recommend maybe walking laps in a pool, swimming, water aerobics since this is “low impact” and great to start with. I also recommend therabands (you can find these at any walmart, target, or sports store). It is great resistance to build strength. Hope this helps! Good luck to you!
walking and simple resistence activities using your own body weight (modified push ups, crunches).
Swimming (at a local gym in cooler weather), or YOGA
Personally, I prefer stress-free exercise, like yoga. It’s fun, relaxing, and really good for your body. But if that doesn’t appeal to you, I suggest taking up a new hobby, such as bicycling, roller skating, horseback riding, etc… All of these sports are really fun, and you don’t really even realize you’re exercising. I’ve been riding horses for a couple of years, and I have never been more fit!
Good luck!
