Help Your Child “Straighten Up” with Spine Surgery for Scoliosis
If your child has recently been diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a curvature of the spine, you should have already been referred to an orthopedic surgeon who will determine whether or not your child is a likely candidate for spine surgery to correct the curvature. Most likely what will first happen is that they will see what degree of curvature your spine is at; that will determine whether spine surgery would be the right option for your child. If the spine curvature is more than 50-60 degrees, spine surgery would be a good choice. If, however, the curvature is less than 50 degrees, a specially designed back brace may be prescribed to wear in place of an invasive surgery. If your child wears a back brace on a consistent basis, it will most likely straighten your child’s spine well enough to not require spine surgery.
