PPIs For Acid Reflux Disease
Proton Pump Inhibitors - known as PPIs - are used to stop acid production in the stomach by blocking the enzyme which is responsible for causing it. It is supposed to be a better blocking agent than the #2-blockers.
Promotility agents help the stomach to empty faster by tightening the lower esophageal Sphincter. Doctors don’t like to prescribe these agents for acid reflux disease because they have some negative side effects. Cisapride was taken off the market here in the United States because there was concern with drug interactions. The Promotility agents are not as effective as the Proton Pump Inhibitors.
